Tribute to Gary...

It was sad see Gary leave our team. I knew I would like him when in HB he got up and said that one of the best innovations of all time was 'Glide' floss from Crest. Little did he know that I had just picked up a 4-pack of the stuff 2 weekends ago from Costco and actually carry Glide with me in my backpack.

Not to mention the fact that he actually tried Muay Thai, that's one bad ma'majama.

Gary, you'll be missed.

Thanks for the kind words. I have to admit that last week was a huge rollercoaster for me. It started w/ getting an e-mail Mon. morning from my VP saying "as of now, you are off this project". As an e-mail, I wasn't sure how to interpret it. It could have been meaning "fly home now and get back to work". Plus the HR VP was cc'd on the e-mail, so it felt like I had done something to jeopardize my job.

I so wanted to stay and at least take part for the week. I chose the "better to ask forgiveness then ask for permission" and drove up to Glendale anyway. I figured that if I went to the 1st mtg before responding to the e-mail, it would be harder to pull me off the conference right away. Plus I thought not even showing up would make Gerber look bad. Still it felt like I was doing something wrong or unethical even though I knew I hadn't.

The other emotional roller coaster was leaving on Thursday. I had gotten very attached to the team and felt much love in return. It's strange to leave knowing the group was going on. The group is such an energetic, young, bright, passionate group that it was invigorating to be a part of it and difficult to leave it.

Last emotional piece is that Rich's lecture felt like he was talking directly to me as a "Profit in the Wilderness". Seems to me like Nestle treats their marketers better than I'm used to. Also, the classic CPG sturcture of Associates (Gerber doesn't have Assoc) suits me well. Hadn't realized how much working with young, passionate, bright people inspires me.

I absolutely must echo dshizzles senitments. It was a real pleasure getting to know you over these last few weeks. You always continued to challenge our thinking and push us forward at the same time, a very unique and highly valuable skill.

Whatever happens on this whole thing just know that you're not losing these connections, we're just going to have to be more creative about keeping you involved in all we do. Thanks for all your contributions and, more importantly, your friendship!
